With the holidays approaching, Canada Post is busier than Santa’s toy shop. The company is adding people and vehicles to ensure that cards and gifts reach Canadians in time for Christmas.

As the only company that delivers to every address in the country—and a supplier of choice for people who shop online—Canada Post is expected to deliver more than one billion cards, letters and parcels by Christmas Day. The company will employ 2,400 additional workers to help with the increased mail volumes, as well as schedule more planes and trucks to carry greeting cards and parcels this holiday season.

“Our operation is geared to ensure that we meet our customers’ expectations,” said Cal Hart, Senior Vice President of Processing, Engineering and Infrastructure at Canada Post. “The only thing that can slow us down is bad weather, but we’re ready for that too.”

Each work day, Canada Post employees travel some 1.5 million km delivering mail and parcels to 15 million addresses—a distance that would take a person to the moon and back twice. The number of trucks operated by Canada Post this holiday season will exceed 1,330 to ensure local delivery.

“This is something we do each year to handle the extra mail entrusted to us,” said Mr. Hart. “Our employees are proud to deliver for Canadians—especially during the holidays.”

To ensure mail and parcels are delivered on time, Canadians should…

  • Ensure that mailing and return addresses are clearly written
  • Use sturdy boxes for packages and seal them with packaging tape
  • Boxes being mailed should not be wrapped in colourful paper or string
  • If recycling a box, remove old addresses or UPC codes
  • Wrap items inside a box in bubble wrap or newspaper so that they don’t move
