Canada Post will continue to negotiate despite strike notification

Canada Post remains committed to reaching a negotiated settlement that will protect postal service, minimize future postal rate increases and improve the wages of our employees. This commitment remains despite the fact that the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) has served notice that it intends to take 45,000 employees out on strike as early as 11:59 p.m. EDT on June 2, 2011.

Canada Post has tabled a fair and competitive offer to CUPW that gives employees better wages and benefits than they have now, and protects their job security and pensions. Specifically the offer provides:

  • Annual wage increases
  • The continuation of an annual cash bonus tied to the company’s performance
  • Job security
  • No changes to a Defined Benefit pension plan
  • Comprehensive benefits for employees and retirees
  • A new sick leave program that provides equal coverage to all employees
  • Generous vacation leave

For employees hired in the future, Canada Post has proposed a comprehensive and industry leading pay and benefits package that includes a new starting wage rate, a Defined Benefit pension plan, job security, up to six weeks annual vacation leave, and post-retirement benefits. In addition, the company has proposed making current and future CUPW employees part of the same sick leave program that has been implemented for other bargaining agents as well as management and executives.

If there is a work disruption mail and parcels will not be delivered. However, contingency plans are in place to ensure the safety of any items that remain in the mail stream during the work disruption. There are also plans to ensure Canada Post returns to normal operations as quickly as possible following any work disruption.
